THE Central Region Soccer League will mark a major milestone this evening with the launch of a knock out tournament.

Dubbed the Dream Inn and GMI Super 8 Challenge Cup, the competition will feature the top eight teams at the half way stage of the season.

Hardrock owner, Shepherd Chahwanda through two of his business portfolios, Dream Inn and GMI is sponsoring the cup competition.

“This sponsorship marks an important milestone for Gold Metal Investments and Dream Inn as we deepen our commitment to the development of football in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“We recognize the immense talent within the Central Region and believe that investing in the game is an investment in our communities, our youth and the future of the sport.”

The launch of the cup competition will mark a significant turnaround in the Central Region football administration.

This will be the first time in a very long time that the league has had a cup competition.

Log leaders, Blanket Mine, Chapungu, West Nicholson, Kwekwe United, Gwanda Pirates, Grain Tigers, Super Strikers and army side, Tongogara will feature in the inaugural tournament.

The format of the competition and venues for the fixtures will be revealed at the launch

Currently, the central region is on a mid-season break, and will resume on the first weekend of August.

Gwanda side, Blanket Mine led by Luke Petros-Jukulile leads the race for promotion.

Chapungu are among the favorites to win the tournament

They are just a point ahead of former Premiership side Chapungu, who are in second place.

West Nicholson and Kwekwe United follow in third and fourth place respectively, in what should be a tight race for promotion to the top flight.

But that fierce rivalry will momentarily shift to the cup competition as the fight for honors rages on.
