FORMER Kwekwe Cables and Shabanie Mine defender, Fetrigo Santiago has sadly passed away at the age of 44.

Reports indicate that Santiago passed on in Gweru on Sunday morning.

Details on the cause of his death are still sketchy but his former team Shabanie Mine confirmed his passing in a Facebook post.

“It is with profound sadness that Shabanie Mine Fc announces the passing on of former player Fetrigo Santiago, who passed away in Gweru early today,” the club said.

The player burst on the scene at the turn of the millennium and featured for the defunct Kwekwe Cables.

He made his name as a rock solid left sided full back where he made waves as a ball playing defender.

His exploits attracted several top teams and at one point was on the books of Harare giants Caps United before eventually settling at Shabanie.

“Santiago was a cherished member of our 2010 squad that ushered Chinda boys back to PSL after playoffs even though he played for us before, known affectionately by supporters as Fatty, Fetrigo made a lot of appearances for the club,” the club added.
