Gwanda Pirates moved to within two points of leaders Chapungu with a clinical 2-0 win against West Nicholson in the Central Region Soccer League on Sunday.

Ezimnyama Ngenkani as Pirates are fondly referred to are now in second position on the log standings with 11 points from five matches.

They trail leaders Chapungu who are on 13, both sides are yet to taste defeat and will clash next.

Gwanda Pirates coach, Johannes Ngodzo is delighted that his side is beginning to find its strides after a sluggish start to the season.

“We didn’t start so well, we may have been doing the right things but we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal,” he said.

Meanwhile, log leaders, Chapungu are keeping their feet on the ground despite a flying start to the campaign.

The Air force of Zimbabwe side clobbered Shabanie Mine 3-0 at Ascot stadium on Sunday.

In-form striker Edward Watson scored a brace with Brighton Magiliza scoring another.

Chapungu assistant coach, Moenda Muchingami dismissed talk of being title favourites.

“I cannot say we are title favourites yet, but I am happy we managed to pick up three points,” he said.

“We prepared for this match knowing that it was a Midlands derby and we psyched our boys well and they knew what was at stake.

“It’s still early in the season and these points we collected will help us in a big way in the future.”

Elsewhere, Kwekwe United got the better of Sabi Gold Mine winning 3-1 to keep within touching distance of the leaders.

The Kwekwe side are in fourth place just three points adrift of the leaders.
