THE Midlands Handball Board (MHB) will this weekend host a two day Handball tournament in Gweru starting on Saturday dubbed the Midlands Inter District Handball Competitions.

This is part of the organization’s initiative to combat drug and substance abuse amongst the youth in the country.

It is also part of the organization’s broader vision of developing talent under the athletes development program.

At least 544 athletes and 92 officials from all the eight districts in the province will gather at Chaplin High School in Gweru.

Farai Gwisai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the games said the goal of the games is to educate the youths about the dangers of drug abuse.

“The idea is to fight drug and substance abuse through Handball,” said Gwisai.

“We are using handball as a vehicle to gather youths in the province so that we can educate them about the ills of drugs and substance abuse.”

The tournament will see teams competing in under 14 and under 18 categories for both male and ladies teams.

Gwisai added that the tournament will be used as a platform to select the best team that will represent the province at national level.

“The winners of this competitions will be able to take part in the Zimbabwe Handball Federation interprovincial competitions for both age groups.

“At the same time, they will get a tour to the Partille handball tournament in Sweden, which is one of the biggest attracting more than 20 000 athletes,” he added.
