FOR the greater part of the season it looked like the race for promotion to the top flight was a two horse with Sheasham and Hard Rock the main protagonists.
But with eight matches to go, the script may have tweaked a bit. Enter Gwanda Pirates!!
The Gwanda side forced their way into the race for promotion with a deserved 1-0 victory against the Construction boys on Sunday.
The win put their points tally to 58 points and cement third spot on the standings as they trail Sheasham by eight points.
Hard Rock occupy second place with 64 points, two behind the Gweru side.
Gwanda Pirates coach Johannes Ngodzo is not reading much into the win against Sheasham.
“The Sheasham game is now behind us, we are focusing on our next assignment against FC Platinum U19, ” he said.
“At the moment we take it one game at a time, and try to get points in each game but importantly I want the team to be competitive.
“I am not used to fighting for second or third place, that is what I told the boys we have to be competitive, we are fighting to be better than ourselves not looking at other teams.”
Just like Ngodzo, Hard Rock coach Calvin Maphosa is also shying away from the promotion talk.
Instead, he is being diplomatic about his side’s chances, “This race is a marathon,”. Maphosa said after his side’s 5-0 win against Jame West.
“Now we are heading towards the finish line but we are not looking at other teams and what they are doing, we are focusing internally on how we are performing and trying to get maximum points each time.”
Seasoned striker Donald Ngoma notched up his sixth goal in four matches after scoring a brace to lead the root.

Benedict Sithole, Tinashe Mashaireni and Blessing Sibanda were also on target for the Kasongo boys.
Can Sheasham hold on to top spot for the remainder of the season?
