GWERU City Council (GCC) has given business operators a two week ultimatum to install bins in their operating areas or risk persecution.
The local authority says they are deeply concerned by the poor waste management that has become rampant in the Central Business District (CBD).
This has also forced council to work outside their scheduled times, clearing the refuse in the city.
In a notice on Wednesday, GCC urged business operators to ensure they have bins at their premises by the 10th of February.
Business operators must also ensure that refuse is disposed of every morning.
The local authority further said that failure to comply with the notice will result in the council taking punitive measures against perpetrators.
This includes evoking the city’s By- Laws, the Council Public Health By-Laws (Statutory Instrument 12 of 1982, Section 58 (4) states that:
“The occupier of any premises shall place or cause the bins
or other receptables referred to in subsection (1) to be placed in a convinient position on the premises in a place easily accessible for the purpose of the collection and removal by the employees of the council of the refuse contained therein”
“Class ‘A’ refuse shall, pending removal, be deposited only in approved
galvanized iron bins or some other approved type of receptable, and the
occupier of the premises on which such bins or other receptables are kept
shall keep such bins or other receptables properly always covered with close-fitting lids.”
Gweru has a history of diarrheal diseases having experienced Cholera and Dysentery outbreaks in years gone by.
The move by the local authority is aimed at maintaining sanity in the city and broadly a preventative measure against diarrheal diseases.
