FORMER premiership side, Chapungu are targeting a strong end to the season as they seek to lay the foundation for a better season next year.

It has largely been an unforgettable season for the Air force of Zimbabwe side blighted with several misfortunes.

From their top striker Edward Watson suffering an injury setback that ruled him out for the season, to losing coach Tawanda Marimo, who passed on after a short illness.

The Gweru side like soldiers they managed to pick themselves up and fight on regardless of the adverse circumstances.

Despite being 28 points behind log leaders Hard Rock and being out of contention for promotion, Waru Waru have revised their targets to a top four finish.

Currently, Chapungu are in fourth place on 51 points, five more than fifth placed Tongogara.

They host Hard Rock at Ascot stadium on Friday in what could potentially be a decisive match in the race for promotion.

“Being a big team that we are, it was not a good season by our standards,”Chapungu interim coach Tererai Zinyowera reflected.

“However, there was a need to regroup, rebuild, and reflect,we now shift our focus to next season.

“But with an eye on finishing strongly this season and laying a good foundation for next season focusing on what we have learnt and how we can come back stronger.”

Building for the future

Chapungu were relegated from the top flight in 2019 and have struggled to assert themselves in the Central Region Soccer League to mount a comeback into the PSL.

But Zinyowera feels making a strong finish to the season will give his side a good foundation to build on next term.

“It’s very important for us to finish strongly this season in the sense that we want to lay a strong foundation for the upcoming season,”added the former Black Aces and Eiffel Flats player.

“So it’s important to win all our remaining games and see where that takes us at the end of the season.”
