TELONE handed Ngezi Platinum Stars their first defeat of the season edging the former league champions 2-1 at Ascot stadium on Saturday.

The WiFi boys produced a solid defensive display to keep the visitors at bay and secure maximum points.

Striker, Tawanda Macheke put his name on the score sheet four minutes into the match to give TelOne the lead.

Malvin Gaki then equalized moments after the break giving Madamburo hope of a comeback.

But that was quickly dashed as Washington Navaya scored what would prove to be the winner two minutes later.

The gangly striker dived to connect with a Macheke cross for what was his fifth of the season and the winner for TelOne.

TelOne coach Hebert Maruwa chose to be modest.

“At the moment we are not looking at the log, we are taking it one game at a time,” he said.

“I am happy with the progress we are making and how the youngsters are progressing.”

Ngezi Platinum Stars coach, Takesure Chiragwi said despite the loss, the performance by his players was encouraging.

“We did not come here to lose but this is football and there is competition,” he said.

“I’m happy that we lost but we controlled the game and that gives us hope that we can win the next match.”

At Mandava stadium, FC Platinum were held to a goalless draw by Green Fuel.

This means the Zvishavane side have now gone for 180 minutes without scoring a goal.

Their coach Norman Mapeza remains adamant goals will come.

“We don’t have to give up we have to keep fighting,” said the former warriors skipper.

“I know it’s hard, I don’t have to take anything away from the boys they have been working hard.

“We had some good half chances, the ball couldn’t just cross the line. We will not give up.”

At Nyamhunga stadium in Kariba, Kwekwe United paid the prize for their shambolic preparations as the were hammered 5-0 by ZPC Kariba.

Kwekwe United coach Saul Chaminuka described the performance as the worst in his career.

“I think this is the worst result I have had,” Chaminuka told the media.

“This is because of the way we approached this match from the preparation to everything.

“Our travelling was poor, we arrived here late, no warm up the players had to do warm up in the match and we conceded two early goals.”

He added: ” We came here to do damage control, and damage control we did, it could have been worse maybe 8 or 10 goals.”
