TELONE football club are set to commence renovations of Ascot stadium this week and are targeting at having the facility ready for the second half of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
The Gweru side are currently using Bata stadium for their league matches.
They however, prefer the rustic facility as their home ground and have lined up repair works to bring the facility up to the required standards for top flight football.
Telone club president Oscah Nduwure last week told The Echo Sports that work at the Gweru City Council (GCC) owned facility would begin this week.
“Work will start with the ablution facilities and perimeter fence, also some painting, it should start next week(this week),If you visit Ascot stadium you will see that there will be maintenance work,” Nduwure said.
Ascot stadium last hosted premiership football in 2022 when Whawha used the facility before their relegation at the end of the same season.
The stadium has however, deteriorated further due to neglect but Nduwure is optimistic his side will do their best to have the facility ready at some point this season.
“Our target is to have the stadium ready by the beginning of the second half of the season. There isn’t much needed, from the report we got from the FIB. Maybe the toilets are biggest issue which we will work on starting with the VIP toilets,” he added.
The WiFi boys are believed to have struck a deal with the local authority that will see the telecoms backed side renovate the stadium and in return get a waiver on rentals and stadia hire fees.
The Gweru side recently parted ways with coach Tendai Chikuni after a string of poor results replacing him with former Dynamos coach Hebert Maruwa.
Telone slid into the relegation zone after a 2-0 loss to champions Ngezi Platinum Stars on Saturday, they’re in 16th place with 11 points.
The WiFi boys would prefer to take the relegation fight to their preferred home ground in the second half of the season, closer to their fans.
