FORMER CAPS UNITED captain and former national team player Tapiwa Kumbuyani has died at the age of 41.
He passed on in his home town of Gweru on Sunday after a long illness.Reports suggests he succumbed to liver cancer.
Kumbuyani was a decorated footballer who cut his teeth in the premiership at Chapungu and featured for Masvingo United,Monomutapa, How Mine and Bantu Rovers in a career that spanned nearly two decades.
He retired at Chapungu in 2019 when the team was relegated from the top flight.
Maxwell Dube, who played alongside Kumbuyani at Chapungu described the former defender as a courageous fighter.
“Tapiwa’s journey was marked by courage and resilience even in the face of adversity,” the 2001 Soccer Star of the year posted on his Facebook timeline.
“Despite battling liver cancer he remained optimistic and just last Wednesday he spoke of his improving health on the video call we had. Sadly he departed from us this afternoon.”
