CAPS UNITED suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of new boys Bikita Minerals to put a stain on what was supposed to be a perfect homecoming at the reopened Rufaro stadium.

The recently refurbished facility last hosted Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches in 2019, and only got the nod to host top flight football on Wednesday.

Makepekepe faithfuls had even rendered extra support to council officials carrying out renovations in a bid to expedite the repair works in order for them to host Saul Chaminuka’s Lithium boys.

Bikita Minerals forward, Chris Makarimba was the party popper with his first half strike separating the two sides.

“It was a game of moments, there were some good moments and also some very bad moments,” Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe said after the match.

“In one situation I thought we could have dealt with the situation and we did not do so very well, and it was in that moment that we conceded a goal. The whole idea was to win the match and unfortunately it was a lost cause. This is the most disappointing thing.”

Once the Masvingo based side took the lead it became difficult for Makepekepe to come back into the match as the visitors defended well and had goalkeeper Francis Tizayi making crucial saves.

First he denied William Manondo’s header off a Godknows Murwira cross after 65 minutes before another save to thwart Lot Chiwunga ten minutes later.

Chaminuka emphasized the significance of the result saying it was their first real test of character and strength.

“We understood that we were playing a big team and our game plan was to hit them on the counter, and that’s how we got our goal. This is a big win for us because this was a game that was going to show if whether we are in the league to stay or maybe we have just come to day goodbye,” he said.
