ZIMBABWE Cricket national under 19 side lost their opening match to Sri Lanka by 39 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in Kimberly, South Africa.

After a good start in which the young Chevrons put in the Sri Lankans to bat first and momentarily put them in a spot of bother striking to get three early wickets, Zimbabwe eventually restricted Sri Lanka to 204 runs.

Dinura Kalupahana top scored for Sri Lanka with a knock of 60 off 55 balls while Sharujan Shanmuganathan made 41 off 40 balls. Kohl Eksteen picked three wickets for the young Chevrons, captain Matthew Schonken and Newman Nyamhuri each got two wickets.

Zimbabwe were given a revised target of 129 runs to win in 22 overs after the rains disrupted play but could only manage a paltry 89 runs as skipper Schonken was the only one to make a meaningful score putting up 27 runs.

After the match, Schonken admitted the side had let Sri Lanka off the hook after a good start.

“We probably we have wanted to win from where we where but we slipped off with the fielding, we allowed too many ones in the circle,” he said.
