ALL is set for the Fitness Physiques Africa Southern region bodybuilding championships to be held at the Zimbabwe college of music on Saturday.
The bodybuilding showcase that will feature 13 different categories is set to attract some of the top athletes in the country.
Fitness Physiques Africa founder Cathy Martin said while the idea is to grow the sport in the country, she is using this year’s competition to fight drug abuse.
“We have a drug problem in our society, so for me it’s not just about sport, I also do drug and substance abuse campaigns,” Martin told The Echo Sports.
“So the message really is that life is not about just doing drugs, there is so much you can do.So I want the youth to engage in sport.”
Martin, a former bodybuilding athlete and the only woman in the country running a bodybuilding contest said the support she has received is overwhelming.
“The support we have gotten from bodybuilders around the country expressing their willingness to participate is absolutely amazing, I am overwhelmed by the support,” she added.
Gweru based Muscle and Fitness gym bodybuilder Yeukai Midzi who will participate in the women’s bikini fitness category is thrilled by the level of support for female athletes under the FPA competitions.
” One thing I love about the competitions is that there is more recognition of female athletes, also the prize monies are the same for men and female which promotes fairness and gender equality,” Midzi said.
