GWERU City Council(GCC) has appointed Livingston Churu as the city’s substantive Town Clerk.
He assumes the post on a full time basis after nearly three years in an acting capacity.
The position of town clerk fell vacant after the suspension of the city’s Town Clerk Vakai Chikwekwe in February 2023.
This was after Chikwekwe was arrested for criminal abuse of office and subsequently dismissed from the local authority.
But on Thursday, GCC confirmed the appointment of Churu through a notice.
“The Mayor of the City of Gweru, Councillor M Chivhoko, Councillors, Chamber Secretary Mr. O Masimba, and Management are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. L Churu as the substantive Town Clerk of the City of Gweru,”read the notice.
“We warmly congratulate Mr. Churu on this appointment and look forward to his leadership in driving the city’s development forward!”

Churu is a seasoned administrator, who previously served as one of the senior managers at GCC.
His appointment is expected to steady the local authority’s administrative structure.
The Town Clerk position at the local authority has been highly volatile in the past couple of years.
This has seen the change from Daniel Matawu, Agnes Gwatipedza and Chikwekwe all vacating the position under controversial circumstances.
