A Zvishavane man was recently sentenced to five years imprisonment for contravening the Electricity Act.

Boniface Chisaka (46) was arraigned before the Zvishavane Magistrate Court where he was convicted.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA), Chisaka was charged with illegal possession of material used for transmitting electricity without a permit.

It is the State’s case that on November 20, 2024, around 1600 hours, the accused was burning ZESA copper cables at his place of residence.

Detectives from the ZRP received tip off of the accused’s shenanigans.

The detectives visited the accused’s residence and found him stripping and burning ZESA cables.

They asked Chisaka to produce a licence which authorized him to possess the cables and he failed to do so.

He was arrested and 17 kgs worthy of ZESA cables worthy USD $731 were recovered.

In another incident, a 24 year old Gweru man, Thanks Mangisi of Claremont Park brought to court facing negligent driving charges.

He was found guilty and ordered to pay USD 200 fine, a wholly suspended two year prison sentence and ordered not to drive a motor vehicle for five months.

It is the State’s case that on December 3, 2023, the accused was driving towards Mkoba along ED Mnangagwa way.

He allegedly hit another Honda Fit from behind.

The court ruled that the accused person was negligent in one or more of the following;

a) Travelling too close to the vehicle in front.

b) Failing to keep a proper look out under the circumstances.

c) Failing to stop or act reasonably, when an accident or collision seemed imminent.
