A Gokwe couple together with their seven day old child were swept away as they attempted to cross a flooded Sanyati river in Gokwe.

The deceased have been identified as Simbarashe Kanyonde(27), and his wife Lucia Dzimba(23), both of Mutukani village, Chief Chireya in Gokwe.

ZRP Midlands spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occured on 21 January when the two were trying to visit the hospital to seek medical attention for their child at a local hospital.

“The two and their baby girl aged seven days old were on their way to Chidamoyo Hospital to seek treatment for the ill baby,” he said.

“When they reached Sanyati river, they boarded a canoe intending to cross to the other side. It is alleged, the canoe capsized in the middle of the river and the family was swept away.”

Insp Mahoko added that Dzimba was found floating on the water with the baby strapped on her back about 700metres away, villagers from the nearby areas retrieved the bodies, while the body of Kanyonde is still missing.
