A Bindura man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to rape a pregnant woman.

Robert Sebastian (39), of Withington Farm, Bindura, appeared before the Bindura Regional Magistrates Court facing charges of attempted rape.

He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident happened on the 7th of August.

It is alleged that a 21 year old pregnant woman was walking to Foothills clinic for a routine medical check up when she met Sebastian.

After exchanging greetings, he grabbed the woman by her jacket and pulled her into the bush.

There, he tripped her to the ground and attempted to rape her.

However, the woman managed to sweet tongue him that the two could enjoy the act since she stayed alone.

The two made their way to the woman’s residence, unbeknown to the offender that he was walking into a trap.

Upon arriving at her place, the woman alerted her husband and neighbors,
who apprehended the offender and handed him to the police.

The complainant’s torn clothes were presented in court as evidence, together with her testimony.

“This conviction demonstrates that the justice system will impose tough penalties on those who prey on women and vulnerable persons,” the NPA said.

“Communities are urged to continue working with law enforcement by reporting crimes quickly, so that offenders are held accountable and public safety is protected.”
