A Shurugwi man who is being charged with murdering his three month stepchild has been remanded in custody.
Tatenda Masunda(24) of Shurugwi, appeared before the Shurugwi Magistrate accused of murdering his three month old step daughter.
He will be back in court on November 21.
It is the State’s case that on November 3 this year, Masunda stopped his wife from taking the baby with hear to a nearby borehole where she intended to do her laundry.
He is alleged to have remained with the baby where he reportedly poisoned the baby.
It is alleged he retrieved a poisonous substance used in gold purification and fed it to the baby.
The State further outlines that Masunda brought the visibly distressed baby to the mother.
Upon noticing the baby’s deteriorating health, the mother took the baby to Zvamabande hospital.
She was however, refered to Shurugwi District hospital where the baby was pronounced dead on arrival.
Masunda fled the scene to Chegutu where he was subsequently arrested.
He will be back in court on November 21 pending further investigations.
