POLICE in the Midlands province have launched a man hunt for a fraudster who is on the prowl fleecing job seekers and civil servants.
The unidentified man(pictured) is impersonating himself as Andrew Chimanyiwa, the provincial Public Service commission coordinator.
According to the police, the man is in the habit of calling unsuspecting job seekers with promises of employment.
He then demands payment of cash in the region of US$ 300-US$400 in return for guaranteed placements.
According to ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko six cases have been reported so far.
“May the public be informed that ZRP is investigating cases of impersonation of a Public Official,” Insp Mahoko said.
“Innocent job seekers being fleeced of money in the region of USD$300-00 to USD$400-00 purportedly to get employed or favourable postings in the civil service.
“The fraudster identifies himself as A. Chimanyiwa using different cell phone numbers. Some of the numbers are: 0711 357 131, 0713 688 680, 0710 305 422.”
Reports have so far been recorded in Gweru,Kwekwe, Zvishavane and other provinces.
Insp Mahoko detailed the cell phone numbers being used in the commission of crime by the suspect.
“Victims are instructed to deposit money in Eco cash number 0787 332 912 or Inn bucks accounts with different names,” he added.
The matter came to light after Chimanyiwa reported to the police in a bid to save his reputation.
This was after the suspect attempted to fleece some civil servants who then called Chimanyiwa to verify.
“The targeted victims decided to call the complainant Andrew Chimanyiwa to verify before depositing the requested amounts,” Insp Mahoko further said.
