TWO Gweru City Council (GCC) employees died on duty this Wednesday the local authority has confirmed.
The two, a male and a female were attending to a manhole in Athlone surburb when they reportedly suffocated due to gas.
GCC spokesperson, Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed the incident.
“It is with a heavy heart that i announce the tragic loss of two city employees who passed away while they were on duty in Athelone,” she said.
“The incident occured when they were working on a manhole, unfortunately, they succumbed to gas suffocation.
“Our thoughts go to their families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased.”
Chingwaramusee added that the local authority takes utmost concern in the welfare and safety of its employees and residents.
“The local authority values the lives of employees and residents and takes the safety of our workers very seriously,” she said.
“Henceforth, we will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident to ensure measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies from occuring in the future.”
