Mkoba Teachers College closed over health fear

THE Ministry of Health and Child Care has ordered the closure of Mkoba Teachers College(MTC) in Gweru as a public health measure following a diarrhea outbreak at the institution.

Official records reveal that 508 cases of diarrhea have been recorded at MTC which has prompted authorities to temporarily close the facility as the health ministry battles to control the situation.

This also comes as the Midlands capital is facing dire water challenges with most parts of the city having gone for two weeks without tap water.

“In light of the findings and challenges mentioned above. We believe it is in the best interest of public health to take immediate and decisive action,” Midlands provincial health director Dr Mary Muchekeza said.

“We recommend temporary closure of the institution and postponement of all scheduled events for 14 days until all recommendations made to the institution have been thoroughly met.”

Fears are that if uncontrolled, this outbreak could spiral out of control give that the country is faced with a Cholera outbreak with more than 7000 cases having been recorded so far.

Ironically the minister of Health and Child Care Dr Douglas Mombeshora was supposed to address a gathering at MTC this Friday at the World contraception day commemorations but that event has been postponed due to the closure of the educational facility.
