ZVISHAVANE – A local university lecturer has called for the integration of Artificial intelligence (AI) in mining to enhance mining safety in the country.

The call was made in Zvishavane at a ventilation symposium organized by the Midlands State University association of students in mining (MSUASIM) on Wednesday.

The acting deputy dean in the faculty of Engineering and Geosciences, Engineer Engina Nyathi underscored the importance of incorporating (AI) in mining.

“The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the application of electronics in mining ventilation systems are at the forefront of modern mining practices as they offer a glimpse into the future of safer and more efficient operations in the mining industry,” Eng Nyathi said.

“AI can predict changes in ventilation requirements, detect anomalies, and provide early warnings for potential issues and this technology enhances the safety of miners and contributes to more sustainable mining practices.”

The symposium was organised so as to bridge the gap between theory and practice as it allowed mining students to interact with those actively involved in the mining industry.

In attendance was Unki mines chief ventilation engineer Joshua Tigere, who emphsised on the need for students to keep abreast with mining technology and softwares.
