POLICE in Gweru have confirmed the death of an 18 year old from the city after he drowned in a local swimming pool over the weekend.

ZRP midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the death of Tatenda Kuvarega.

It is alleged the teenager, who was not acquainted with swimming skills, dived into the pool where he eventually drowned despite efforts by well wishers to assist him.

“It is confirmed that Police are investigating a sudden death case where an 18-year old Gweru man drowned in a swimming pool on the 28th day of October 2023 at about 1530hrs and at Gweru City Council Swimming Pool just outside Gweru Central Business District,” Insp Mahoko said.

“The now deceased, a resident of Light Industrial site, Gweru jumped into the pool intending to swim. He drowned at once as he did not know how to swim. A member of the public who was nearby jumped into the pool and rescued him.”

With the onset of the summer season, public swimming pools that are run by the Gweru City Council (GCC), are a major recreational attraction.

On Saturday, the local authority notified stakeholders that it was investigating the drowning incident.

“We are currently investigating a case of a male adult who drowned in one of our city pools,” read a statement from GCC.

“It is a sad incident for us, thus we are carrying out an investigation to get to the root cause of the incident.”
