AN elderly couple from Bulawayo has been sentenced to seven years in prison for stealing money from a local bank.
The Tredgold regional magistrate recently convicted Francisca Netsai Sibanda and Frank Sibanda both 65, of stealing over US$34 000 from Stanbic bank.
However, the court suspended four years while the remaining three years will also be suspended if they repay the full amount they stole by 30 June 2025.
The two were found guilty of theft after an erroneous deposit was made into Francisca’s bank account following a failed POS transaction.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority ( NPA), the two withdrew the money and made purchases in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The couple were aware that they were not entitled to the money at that time.
