A Chinese national, was this week sentenced to a combined 30 years in jail after being convicted at the High Court.
Cai Yulong, who operates Stone Steel mine in Zhombe appeared before the High Court in Gokwe recently.
He was facing three charges; of murder, attempted murder an assault.
The court found Yulong guilty of all the charges and was sentenced to a combined 30 years behind bars.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), he was slapped with a 30 year sentence for the murder charge.
He also a got five year jail term for the attempted murder charge and was slapped with a US$100 fine for the assault charge.
All the sentences will run concurrently.
It is the State’s case that on May 26, the now deceased was working underground with his colleagues.
They were all employed by Black Hand 10 mine and were constructing an underground barricade where their mine meets with that of Yulong.
As they were working, Yulong is alleged to have approached them and fired gun shots at them.
They all fled the scene headed for the exit point with Yulong in hot pursuit.
It is alleged the deceased was hot on the thigh and died from injuries sustained from the gunshot.
One of the deceased’s workmates was also shot on the knee and thigh.
The Chinese national is also alleged to have assaulted the third member of the team.
A police report was made leading to the arrest of Yulong.
“He was convicted and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for murder,” reads an update from the NPA.
“He was sentenced to a further five years imprisonment for attempted murder.
“Both sentences will run concurrently. He was also sentenced to US$100 fine for assault.”
