THE late Brazilian football legend, Pele once termed football as “the world’s most beautiful game” but it proved otherwise for a Zhombe man, who tragically lost his life this past Sunday during a fight over an English Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester City.
The two premier league sides clashed in a top of the table encounter at Anfield this past Sunday. The match ended one all.
The now deceased, Edmore Mhike(29) of Hotera village under Chief Samambwa in Zhombe, was watching the match in the company of his brother Peter Mhike (22) and other colleagues at Nganunu tuck shop in Empress mine, Zhombe.
According to ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Peter, a staunch Manchester City supporter was embroiled in a dispute with Joakim Moyo(29) over which team was playing better between the two sides.
The dispute degenerated into a fight between Peter and Moyo, as Peter became violent and started throwing stones at Moyo, leading to Edmore’s intervention.
“His brother Edmore intervened trying to stop him, Peter turned against his brother and attacked him with a wooden bench,” Insp Mahoko said.
“Edmore fell down and Peter picked a stone and struck him on the head and he died instantly.”
Police further say they are on the hunt for Peter who has since gone into hiding and are appealing for information that may lead to his arrest.
