Art can be used as a powerful tool in the rehabilitation of inmates, a senior government official has said.

Speaking in Gweru recently as guest honour at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Midlands music band fund raising golf tournament, Deputy Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Kudakwashe David Mnangagwa said the use of arts and sports was significant in the societal reintegration of prisoners.

He added that art enables inmates to express their experiences and emotions thereby enhancing their mental well-being.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service provincial band stands as a beacon of hope within our correctional system, embodying our shared dedication to rehabilitating and empowering offenders for their eventual return to our communities,”Mnangagwa said in a speech read on his behalf by Public Service Commission Midlands manager, Andrew Chimanyiwa.

“The significance of rehabilitation within correctional facilities cannot be overstated. Beyond the golf tournament we are contributing to a noble cause of rehabilitation and societal reintegration through the transformative power of arts and sports.”

Added Mnangagwa: “Through these initiatives, ZPCS nurtures hope, instills confidence and fosters a sense of belonging among those seeking redemption.

“This commitment to rehabilitation undersores the belief in the transformative potential of every individual, given the right support.

“By investing in these programmes we not only nurture creativity and discipline but also equip individuals with the skills necessary for a successful reintegration into society as productive law abiding citizens.”

The golf tournament is one of the four fundraising events marked by ZPCS Midlands to raise US$20 000 for the procurement of musical equipment for the newly established ZPCS Midlands Province Military and Dance Band.

The band, which has an ensemble of 32 members is the brainchild of Officer Commanding Midlands Province Commissioner Somemore Gate and consists of both officers and inmates.

To date ZPCS Midlands has raised US$3000 through contributions from officers and the money has been used to procure a PA (Public Address) system and placation band drum set.
