THE government is working on upholding and strengthening the rights of consumers and offer protection from errant business operators, a cabinet minister has revealed.

Speaking at the Annual 2023 Conference of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries(CZI) where she was the guest of honor, minister of Industry and Commerce Dr Sithembiso Nyoni said her ministry is working on policy frameworks to combat abuse of consumers.

“My ministry is developing the Consumer protection Policy and General Regulations in order to augment and facilitate the implementation of the current Consumer Protection Act,” she said.

“I would like to encourage our manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to undertake responsible business practices for the improvement of livelihoods for their workers and consumers and the sustainability of our environment for future generations.”

Dr Nyoni also revealed that her ministry is reviewing the Zimbabwe National industrial development policy with the view to create an enabling environment for the growth of industries in the country.

“In order to drive structural transformation, the Ministry is reviewing the Zimbabwe National Industrial Development Policy. The successor policy is premised upon the deliberate decision taken by the Government to open the country for business, modernise, industrialize and promote investment, with the ultimate goal of attaining broadbased economic empowerment, inclusive economic growth and employment creation,” she said.
