LIEUTENANT General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe has been sworn in as the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

He takes over from Kirsty Coventry, who was elected as the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The swearing in ceremony was presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on Thursday.

In his acceptance speech, Lt Gen(Rtd) Sanyatwe said he was honoured to be serving the country in the capacity of minister.

“It is indeed a great honour and special recognition from His Excellency,” he said.

“In fact, i am also humbled with the confidence and trust that the President has accorded me to lead this special Ministry.”

He added that he is looking forward to the task at hand to making an impact locally as well as globally.

“My mission, therefore, is to develop, to create as well as to promote all the aspects that go by our identity and where possible to be recognized locally and internationally,” added Lt-Gen(Rtd) Sanyatwe.

“In essence, sports, Arts and Culture, to me are very strong tools for national unity, youth empowerment as well as economic growth.”

Lt-Gen(Rtd) Sanyatwe was on Tuesday retired from his position as the Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army to take up a ministerial position.

He previously served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Tanzania.
